Troy Barnes Music

I started playing saxophone at 10 years old in the school band. In high school I joined the jazz and dixieland bands. I also performed with the Delta Youth Orchestra, Delta Community Concert Band, Delta Community Beginner Band, and a saxophone quartet assembled by David Branter and Julia Nolan. I performed with several bands at Expo '86 in Vancouver and music festivals in New Westminster and Duncan.

I spent three years at Courtenay Youth Music Centre Camp. Vancouver Community College Sounds of Summer Jazz program. New West Jazz Clinic. UBC Grade 11-12 Honour Band. I've also taken countless hours of private lessons from David Branter. (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, UBC, and current department head at Vancouver Community College School of Music.)

My main instruments are tenor and alto saxophone, and clarinet. I currently also play flute, bass clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. I have also played piano, guitar, drums, french horn, soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone, and bassoon.

I've lived in Aldergrove and been a professional teacher since 1995, working for Young Drivers of Canada and a year later teaching motorcycle at the BC Safety Council. I have been a leader with Scouts Canada for over 10 years. I have taken several courses of Dr. Gordon Neufeld ("Hold On To Your Kids") on using developmental science to make sense of children. I've found that being empathetic really helps with communication and learning. I have spent several years working with youth and constantly upgrading my skills. I continue to learn new things every day and pass on the knowledge to my students. I've been teaching music at Long & McQuade since 2018 and my students are learning lots and really enjoying themselves. I think they absorb some of my enthusiasm for music.
