The Truth about Printer Warranties
“Can using a refilled ink-jet cartridge invalidate the printer warranty?”
This question arises frequently from ...both corporate and consumer clients. The short answer is that no, using a cartridge refilled by Island Ink-Jet and Laser Toners products or services will not void the printer warranty. Over two million cartridges to date have been refilled by Island Ink-Jet and Laser Toners locations, and with years of experience in this industry, we have developed products and techniques to successfully refill cartridges from every manufacturer. By using over 100 different formulations of ink, we ensure the best possible quality and compatibility. We do not use, or recommend, ‘universal’ inks, as our experience has shown that ink can vary greatly from cartridge to cartridge. We carry over 20 formulations of black ink alone. Yellow inks can vary as greatly in pigmentation as mustard and apple juice!
In 1975, Congress passed the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, a federal law that governs consumer product warranties. (In Canada, this is covered in the Combines Act.) Under this Act, tied-selling provisions are prohibited. This means it is illegal for a manufacturer to require customers to make continuing purchases from their company, and voiding the customer’s warranty if an alternative, compatible product is used instead.
An exception to this rule is available if the warrantor satisfies the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used with the warranted product. The FTC must then find that such a waiver is in the public interest. Exception applications are published in the Federal Register and permit public comment. Dispositions of exception requests are also published in the Federal Register. We are aware of no approved exceptions, with respect to printers and the cartridges used therein.
We do understand that there are circumstances where a warrantor may assess additional charges to repair a warranted product, if they can show that the consumer’s use of the product contributed to or caused the defect. If, for instance, an Island Ink-Jet and Laser Toners refilled cartridge leaked ink in the printer and caused the printer to malfunction, the warrantor may assess additional charges to repair the printer. The charges could also be assessed if the consumer incorrectly installed an original cartridge from the same manufacturer. We have refilled over two million cartridges, and have only rarely seen the leakage issue arise. Each time, under our 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed policy, we have paid to repair or replace the printer. Island Ink-Jet and Laser Toners Systems is confident that its refilled ink-jet cartridges can be used in any brand printer, without fear that the printer manufacturer’s warranty will be voided or changed.
